Out with energy charges
Out with energy charges
Gas economy and cutting gas use is essential to us all in current times. It is also financially beneficial when you consider the sustained rise in gas bills driven on by your heating boiler. You may be surprised to understand that up to fifty percent of your energy costs will be related to your gas heating system. To help you we have listed below some prompt advice to cut your heating bills.
switch off gas boilers in areas where you do not need it :
You can easily turn off heating boiler radiators for a period, so switch them off in any rooms that are not going to be used for a while such as a spare bedroom. Cutting the number of rooms which are actively heated will reduce your energy use. Ensure that you also closed the door to the room to prevent air flow and chilled draughts.
Use the boiler not the fire :
The fire is not as cost-efficient as the heating boiler and it will not heat the rest of your home. A lot of the heat generated by a fire goes up in the chimney to the outside, whilst an electric fire appears to give immediate heat it is not as efficient as the gas heating system in heating the room.
Use insulation to stop draughts
Stop being chilly air flowing into your home means that you do not have to pay for energy to continually heat the air. DIY stores stock many insulation materials for use for this. Use a foam based sealer to close off any gaps between your entrance door frame and the windows where these meet the exterior wall. If you live in an older home you might be astounded how often these cracks occur. If you are careful and use a candle flame you can detect where draughts are in a room.
Put on a jumper and warmer clothes :
If you are going to turn up the heating thermostat stop and think whether it could be best to put on some extra clothing. You can save up to ten% on your heating bills just by reducing the thermostat by 1°.
Make better use on your drapes to control temperature :
During the daylight if the sun is shining keep the drapes on the sunny side of the house open to heat the interior of your home. With falling night-time outside temperatures your windowpanes can lose a lot of heat. Closing the drapes provides an insulating layer which helps prevent this, you can save a substantial amount of money over time with this tactic. Thin drapes are not as effective as thick ones at preventing this heat loss.
guidance around the home :
You must insulate your central heating system hot water cylinder if you have one. The hot water tank will hold hot water you have paid for and it is madness to allow this to cool down unused throughout the daylight.
Radiators warm the wall behind and this heat loss can be cut if you put aluminium foil behind the radiators.
