Save on energy

If we watch the TV we all recognise that it is essential to reduce gas use these days. It is also financially beneficial when you consider the continuous increase in gas charges driven on by your gas boiler. Whilst gas central heating systems have become more efficient in recent months they will often consume up to half of all your energy costs. If you want to trim your energy costs read on as we have outlined some actions you can take.

switch off heating boilers in areas where you do not need it :
If you have a spare bedroom that is not being used turn off the gas heating system radiator in the room. Why heat rooms which are not going to be used, this only increases your energy expenditure. Ensure that you also closed the entrance door to the room to stop airflow and chilly draughts.

Use the boiler not the fire :
A central heating system is much more cost-efficient than using a fire to heat one room. With coal or wood fires most of the heat disappears up the flue, the central heating is much more efficient for heating than an electric fire.

Use insulation to stop draughts
gas is wasted in homes due to poor insulation and draughts bringing chilled air into the home. DIY stores carry many insulation materials for use for this. A foam based sealant is good for closing off any cracks between the brickwork and frame for doors or windows. These type of gaps happen often in elderly houses as the foundations settle. Whilst drafts are hidden using a wax candle flame can help to disclose where they are.

Ensure you are wearing warm clothes indoors :
If you are cold in the room put on some more clothes before you move to increase the thermostatic temperature. A ten% reduction in your energy use can easily be reached by cutting your room temperature by 1°.

Your curtains can help to control temperature :
The sun can be used to heat your home in the wintertime by keeping curtains open on the side of the house where it is shining. Your windows can be the cause of a lot of heat loss at nighttime as external temperatures fall. This heat loss can be diminished if you close the curtains, you can save a substantial amount of money over time with this approach. The heavier your drapes the better for providing this supplementary layer of insulation.

advice around the home :
Some central heating systems have a hot water cylinder and this must be insulated. Do not pay to heat water and then permit it cool down during the daytime.

Don’t heat the walls of your house immediately behind the radiators, shiny foil can be used to reflect the heat cutting this heat loss.
